An honest assessment of how deeply ingrained your issues are is essential. If you've been dealing with lifelong issues that brought you to seek therapy then these issues are undoubtedly a part of your character which is entrenched. Building the trust necessary to explore these issues so we can take an honest look at these deep-rooted aspects takes time.

Counselling-Therapy

Counselling-Therapy is a process of exploration, re-education and discovery. It's a holistic approach which explores the many aspects of health and wellbeing, and which helps you learn skills to live more resourcefully and with greater ease.

I work alongside you to develop a practice of mindful awareness so you build a greater awareness of the subtle communications of the mind and felt sensations of the body which normally go undetected. Knowing the subtleties of your body and mind reestablishes a forgotten connection between these two aspects of your being.

Our aim is to look at the challenges you experience and your patterns of unconscious reactivity so we can bring what is presently not conscious into your present awareness. By practicing mindful awareness we re-wire the brain and develop new patterns which bring balance to your emotional life.

In addition to talk therapy and mindfulness I may also use sandtray therapy, drawing therapy, dream interpretation, meditation, relaxation, body/mind focusing as well as other techniques.

For further information on Counselling-Therapy either online or in the Invercargill and Southland area ring me on 027 6878 113 or send an enquiry on the form at the bottom of this page.

We'll explore and discover why you make the same unhelpful or damaging decisions over and over again, why you experience conflict in your relationships or why you 'just can't be contented and happy'. When you gain a better understanding of your issues you're better able to determine how to deal with challenging areas of your life in a more helpful, resourceful and healthy way.

Counselling-Therapy

Our emotional wounds – suppressed and ignored over a lifetime – contribute to the stress we feel, the confusion we experience, the relationships that fail, the physical symptoms we suffer from.

What is my approach?

Counselling-Therapy is a process of exploration, re-education and discovery. It's a holistic approach which explores the many aspects of health and wellbeing, and which helps you learn skills to live more resourcefully and with greater ease.

I work alongside you to develop a practice of mindful awareness so you build a greater awareness of the subtle communications of the mind and felt sensations of the body which normally go undetected. Knowing the subtleties of your body and mind reestablishes a forgotten connection between these two aspects of your being.

What is Counselling-Therapy?

Counselling-Therapy is a holistic approach to healing and life management that focuses on the interconnections between four key aspects:

  • Mental (thought processes)

  • Emotional (expression of feelings)

  • Physical (body)

  • Energetic (non-physical, spiritual)

The aim is to support you to discover and develop resources to help you heal from past difficulties and/or to manage day-to-day life and circumstances.

What will I gain from Counselling-Therapy?

Just some of the many, many benefits of Counselling-Therapy are:

  • Seeing yourself and your thoughts from a clearer perspective

  • Feeling less alone with your problems

  • Finding it easier to cope with life through developing emotional resilience and resourcefulness

  • A feeling of being understood and accepted

  • Developing awareness to help you recognise and accept your emotional experiences so you are not overcome by them

  • Potentially helping to resolve physical issues as sleep difficulties, anxiety and over-eating contribute to physical distress and are often connected to buried emotions

  • Being able to set personal boundaries so you can enjoy healthier relationships

  • Rewiring the brain and developing new neural pathways so old, unhelpful habits are replaced by new, more helpful ones

How does Counselling-Therapy work?

During our sessions, we’ll explore how the past has influenced the present to discover unconscious conflicts which contribute to symptoms of distress.

Our aim is to look at the challenges you've experienced and your patterns of unconscious reactivity so we can bring what is presently not conscious into your conscious awareness.

We'll explore and discover why you make the same unhelpful or damaging decisions over and over again, why you experience conflict in your relationships or why you’re not able to live life with more ease.

When you gain a better understanding your issues and their underlying causes, you're better able to determine how to deal with challenging areas of your life in a helpful, resourceful and healthy way.

What’s the process of Counselling-Therapy?

We’ll discuss any broader problems you’re experiencing that you feel comfortable to share and from there we will determine a time frame for your therapy.

In each session, we’ll talk about the issues that have become relevant since last session and how you've reacted to the happenings in your life each week. More and more you'll: learn about unhelpful reactive patterns; discover old beliefs which may keep you stuck; and  how experiences of the past may limit you and get in the way of living a life in which you are able to thrive.

The goal is to grow in awareness so you can make lasting changes that impact your life and wellbeing now and in the future.

In addition to talk therapy and mindfulness I may also use sandtray therapy, drawing therapy, dream interpretation, meditation, relaxation, body/mind focusing as well as other techniques.

Before each session ends, we’ll take some time to discuss our session and any feelings that have come up for you.

I'll also encourage you to keep a journal between sessions.

How long does Counselling-Therapy last?

Each session is 50 minutes long and usually we will see each other once a week.

Note: If you're in crisis it's advisable to meet twice a week for the first 2-3 weeks, or more, if necessary.

It’s important to keep our sessions regular so we become familiar with one another. As we get to know one another, and a sense of trust develops, we're able to explore your experience of pain or confusion more deeply.

Counselling-Therapy is short, medium or long-term, depending on your needs and what has brought you to therapy. We’ll discuss what duration may be the best fit for you in the earlier stages but they are always subject to change as we go along.

The following questions are helpful to ask when contemplating the length of therapy:

  • How long has this problem been affecting me?

  • How deeply entrenched am I in unhelpful thinking, habits and/or coping skills?

  • How many aspects of my life are being impacted such as work, relationships, health, etc?

Short-term

  • Situational problems and life events (loss of a loved one, redundancy, failure to achieve a goal, children leaving home, retirement, etc.)

  • 10-20 sessions

  • Task and technique oriented

Medium-term

  • Issues which require more support (marriage breakup, illness, relationship difficulties, ageing, etc.)

  • 21-50 sessions

  • Deeper exploration into unhelpful patterns of behaviour

Long-term

  • Deeply ingrained, long-standing issues (of depression, anxiety, anger, etc.; emotional and physical neglect, abuse and trauma)

  • Over 50 sessions

  • For those with an enduring sense of hopelessness or dissatisfaction with life

  • Helps to gain insight into dissatisfaction

  • A journey of self-discovery

  • Helps you develop a more meaningful, connected way of life

  • Gives you the necessary time to explore areas of internal conflict that are holding you back or impacting your relationships
